MiCA Token Marketing Communications: A Readiness Checklist for Teams
Token launch teams often approve a white paper through one process while campaigns, community posts, partner briefs and interviews evolve through another. That creates inconsistent claims, stale token data and disclosures added too late. Under MiCA, marketing communications for in-scope crypto-asset offers need an operating system tied to the approved source of truth.

The direct answer

Before dissemination, establish scope and legal review, white-paper consistency, required statements, contact information, version control, channel approval and correction ownership. Marketing should not interpret MiCA alone; qualified counsel must determine whether the specific asset, offer, audience and communication are in scope.

1. Determine scope before writing

Document the asset, offer or admission event, offeror or responsible person, target Member States, audience, timing and communication types. Identify exemptions or special treatment only through qualified advice.

This checklist focuses on operational control after scope has been determined. It is not a substitute for the legal classification.

2. Use Article 7 as an operating constraint

For in-scope crypto-assets other than asset-referenced or e-money tokens, MiCA Article 7 says marketing communications must be clearly identifiable, fair, clear and not misleading, and consistent with the crypto-asset white paper where one is required.

It also requires reference to the published white paper, website and contact information, plus a clear responsibility statement in the prescribed form. Article 7 states that marketing communications must not be disseminated before the required white paper is published.

3. Build one controlled claims register

FieldControl
ClaimExact approved wording and permitted variants
White-paper referenceSection and version supporting it
Markets/channelsWhere the wording is approved
Required disclosureText and placement
OwnerLegal, product or technical approver
ExpiryEvent or date requiring review

Claims about utility, supply, availability, partners, timelines and risks should not be copied from memory.

4. Control every distribution surface

Map website, social, community, paid ads, PR materials, interviews, influencers, affiliates, events, email, partner toolkits and translations. Record which team can publish and how approval is proven.

A community reply or founder interview may still function as marketing communication depending on context. Do not assume informal channels are outside review.

5. Make localization reviewable

Translate the approved meaning, required statement, risk information and contact details. Use a glossary for token and product terms. Require a local-language reviewer who can identify when a translation becomes stronger, more certain or less balanced than the source.

Store language, market, version, approver and date with every asset.

6. Link white-paper changes to campaign changes

MiCA includes provisions concerning modification of published white papers and marketing communications. Operationally, define an update trigger: when controlled token information changes, the owner identifies affected assets, pauses incompatible promotion, obtains review and records the correction.

Do not silently replace material wording without a change record.

7. Run a pre-release check

  1. Scope and route confirmed by qualified counsel.
  2. Required white paper published where applicable.
  3. Every material claim mapped to the current source.
  4. Required statements and contacts present.
  5. Translations reviewed.
  6. Partners and influencers use controlled materials.
  7. Archive and correction process active.
  8. Monitoring owner and expiry date assigned.

The minimum communications register

Keep a row for every live asset, not only major campaign files:

FieldWhy it matters
Asset and URLShows exactly what the public can see
Market and languageConnects the asset to its approved scope
White-paper versionIdentifies the source used for consistency review
Claims and disclosuresRecords controlled wording and placement
Approvers and dateCreates an auditable decision trail
Owner and expiry triggerPrevents stale material remaining live after a change

The register should include partner kits, scheduled posts and paid creatives so a material update can be traced beyond the main website.

Sources and methodology

This is an operational communications checklist, not legal advice. Qualified counsel must determine scope, required wording, timing, filings and jurisdiction-specific obligations.
