GEO Services for AI Projects: What a Serious Engagement Should Include
GEO is often sold as a new label for publishing more articles or adding an llms.txt file. Neither is a complete service. An AI company needs a coordinated system that makes its product understandable, its claims verifiable, its pages accessible and its performance measurable across search and answer experiences.

The direct answer

A serious GEO engagement should cover seven workstreams: baseline measurement, crawler and index access, entity consistency, evidence architecture, answerable content, distribution and governance. It should never guarantee citations, AI recommendations or rankings.

Google says no special AI schema or new machine-readable file is required for its AI features; normal Search requirements still apply. OpenAI separately states that sites should allow OAI-SearchBot if they want content eligible for ChatGPT search summaries and snippets. That means GEO starts with platform-specific facts, not a universal trick.

1. Define the commercial questions

List the questions that matter before selecting keywords: Which AI product fits a regulated enterprise? How does one model compare with another? What evidence supports security, latency, integrations or deployment claims? Which product category should include the company?

Map each question to an audience, decision stage, proof requirement and owned destination. This prevents a large content plan from answering questions no buyer asks.

2. Audit access and eligibility

Check robots directives, indexability, canonicals, renderability, internal links, status codes and snippet controls. Important explanations must exist as visible HTML, not only inside a demo, image or client-side interface.

Separate search inclusion from model-training choices. OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot serve different controls. The engagement should document what is allowed, what is blocked, who approved it and how it will be tested.

3. Build an entity and evidence map

Define the company, products, models, people, datasets, integrations, markets and claims. For each material claim record a source, owner, date, methodology and limitation. Resolve conflicts between the homepage, documentation, press materials, profiles and partner pages.

Structured data can clarify information, but it must match visible content. It cannot manufacture evidence that the page does not contain.

Each page should answer the main question early, make supporting facts easy to extract and link to the relevant product or service without turning the article into an advertisement.

5. Earn corroboration

AI visibility is not controlled only by owned pages. Public documentation, credible profiles, relevant editorial coverage, partner references and original research can corroborate an entity. Distribution should prioritize sources that are useful to the intended audience, not a volume of low-quality placements.

6. Measure without inventing a GEO score

Track indexed canonical pages, query coverage, citations where platforms expose them, referral sessions, branded demand, assisted product actions and corrections required. Bing's AI Performance reporting can show citations and grounding queries; OpenAI referrals can be segmented with utm_source=chatgpt.com. Google currently combines AI-feature performance into Web search reporting rather than providing a separate AI Overview report.

A defensible 90-day scope

  1. Weeks 1–3: demand, access, entity and evidence audit.
  2. Weeks 4–6: repair critical technical and factual conflicts; approve the measurement register.
  3. Weeks 7–10: produce or improve a small set of high-value pages and research assets.
  4. Weeks 11–13: distribute, monitor citations and referrals, correct gaps and choose the next questions.

The output should be a prioritized system, not a promise that every answer engine will cite the brand.
